In edit mode, a user can configure parameters of the components existing in a current page or in the site template, and the data rendered by these components.
If not in edit mode yet, you can turn it on by clicking on the mode toggle: 
Now, move the mouse pointer over the webpage surface. Whenever you hover the pointer over an area containing editable data or a configurable component, such area will be highlighted with a red frame and a context toolbar will appear. Consider an example of the Menu component, whose red frame and the toolbar became visible because a user hovers the mouse pointer over it:
If a component existing in the template or the page work area does not print any data on a current page (for example, the navigation chain may be set to not display on the main page), the component will give a positive indication of such behavior by rendering the icon

The component menu may include typical buttons common to general information management commands, as well as the component specific items. For example, the Catalog component show the following toolbar:
