To implement the multilanguage interface, all the text messages (labels, captions etc.) of the Control Panel are stored in the language files in the form of text strings. The language files are located in the language folders (titled by the language name abbreviation) in the folders of the system modules.
For example, the language messages are used to render table headings:
There are two ways to translate the language files into any language:
- by editing the files manually;
- by using the Localization module.
The Localization module offers a neat and comprehensive message translation interface and also has the following features:
- view the count of untranslated messages in language files;
- translate text messages.
To view how many messages are untranslated, open the Interface localization form.
Settings -> Localization:
You will find the number of untranslated messages for each language shown in red. To translate messages, open a file whose messages you want to translate, and type the translation in the corresponding text input fields:
Note: the form will display messages for languages that can be displayed using a single charset.
You can quickly start translating the missing messages directly from a page on which these messages are used (both in the public section and Control Panel). To activate the quick translation mode, use the button (it is visible if the corresponding option is checked in the Localization module settings)
or add the parameter show_lang_files=Y to the page address:
This will display a list of language files whose entries are used to render the text on a current page.
File names are shown as links, which can be clicked to open the language file for editing. In the end of the list you will find a search field. You can use it to find a required message (exact match).
: find the message "Search", displayed in the site search form:
Type "Search" in the message search field:
As a result, a list of files containing the sought phrase will be displayed.
Note that a special link appears beside each file. You can click it to open the message file and scroll right to the sought message.
Note. To aid massive localization projects, a special script has been developed that can collect all the language files altogether. The collected files can be published in the Update system for download by other users.
